Free Crochet Mandala Pattern

Free Crochet Mandala Pattern

Recently I was working on a pattern for the first Loopy Craft kit. Yes, the first one is due any time now! I am quite excited to share it with you. There are obviously a few nerves mingled in as well. I set off to create something that can bring you joy and that can also give others joy. It has been created with a great deal of thought and lots of love. I hope you like it….More of that soon.

I had yarn left over after making the design and sat playing around to find something that I could make to add as a suggestion to use up the yarn that would come in the pack. Another box I wanted to tick is that I want the pack to be great value for money!  Anyhooo…I found myself making a mandala. I have made a few mandalas over the years but have never created one myself from scratch. I didn’t have to work any math out, it is quite simple and just seemed to flow. As it grew it all fitted together without effort.

Here is a guide to make one if you would like to. You can see in the image above the steps for each row.
UK terms.

Yarn weight of your choice and appropriate hook size.

I used Catona cotton with a 4mm hook and also a sample of Three bears DK cotton called affection (this is the one in the image above) using the same hook size.

Stitches used:

SS  (slip stitch)    hook through space, yarn over, pull through space and then loop on hook.
DC (double crochet)   hook through space, yarn over – 2 loops on hook –  yarn over and pull through two loops.
TC  (treble crochet)     yarn round hook, hook through space, yarn over  pull back through – 3 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through last two loops.
HTC (half treble crochet)   yarn round hook, hook through space, yarn over and pull through – three loops on hook – yarn over and pull through 3 loops on hook.

Chain 4 join with ss to make a circle.

Round 1 – chain 3 and make 9 tc into the circle join with ss (10 in total)

Round 2 – Ch 3 then make 1 tc in same space, 2 tc in between each tc from the previous round and join with ss (20 in total)

Round 3 – ch 4 then 1 tc into same space. ch 2 then miss one ch and in between the 2tc of the previous round make **1 tc 1 ch 1 tr and then ch 2,     ** continue round from ** to ** join with ss in the top of the 3rd chain of the starting ch 4.

Round 4 – ss into ch 1 space and ch 3 then ch 1, make 4 tc into ch 2 space, ch 2.  Continue round making 1 tc into ch 1 space, ch 1 and 4 tc into each ch 2 space then ch 2. join with ss in top of starting chain 3.

Round 5 – ch 3 then 2 tc into same space. **miss 3ch 3 tc into the 4th ch miss 2 ch and 3 tc into 3rd ch (this is the top of the tc on the previous row) ** continue round from ** to ** and join with ss into top of starting sc 3.

Round 6 – ch 2 then 1 dc into each chain. join with ss into the 2nd ch of the start 2 chain.

Round 7 – ch 3 and 1 tc in each ch. join with ss in the top of the start chain 3.

Round 8 – ch 3 then 1 tc into the same space. **ch 2 miss 1 ch and make 2 tc in the next ch** continue round from ** to ** join with ss into top of starting ch 3.

Round 9 – ss into the ch 2 space. chain 3 then 2 tc  continue and into each ch 2 space make 3 tc. join with ss into top of starting ch 3.

Round 10 – ch 3 and then 1 tc in each ch. join with ss into top of starting ch 3.

Round 11 – ch 2 and then 1 htc into each ch. Join with ss into starting ch 3.

Round 12 – **ch 4 and ss into the 3rd chain** continue round from ** to ** join with ss into starting space.

Round 13 – dc into the ch 4 space then 6 tc and 1 dc. **Dc into the next ch 4 loop, 6 tc and 1 dc ** continue round from ** to ** join with ss into the starting space and fasten off.

I hope that all makes sense. If you spot any mistakes please do get in touch.
