I was so taken with the idea and was very keen to get involved.
This is what it says on the website..
"We are a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world. Learn more about how it works."
As is often the case I made the decision to get involved but made the mistake of not taking action there and then! It went from my mind and over the last few years there have been reminders as I browse facebook or it is mentioned elsewhere on my visits round the internet and each time I think " Oh yes I want to do that!" and each time one thing or another has meant that I didn't get round to it..
Today - as I sat surrounded by catalogues deciding where to spend the remaining money we have put aside for purchasing stock - I thought about how lucky I had been to get the initial grant that set me off on this path..
Then the idea of helping someone else do a similar thing came to mind and in the future I would love to have the ability to assist someone in their first steps in business...That is now something for me to aim towards.. To gift an amount of money ( and possibly some experience and guidance if that would be welcomed ) to help someone get a foot on the ladder.. Not quite in the Dragons Den league but every little helps!
No idea how I could do it but I will sort that out when the time comes...
That is when Kiva came to mind again. Although I had forgotten the name and had kira in mind so googling that got me no where! I found the site eventually and decided to go ahead today..$25 is an amount that I could afford and although a relatively small amount it could have a great impact on someone's life...
The first option on the page to lend was a story about Dominga..
"Dominga is one of the members. She is requesting this loan to buy products like fabric and thread in order to make clothes because she is a seamstress. This will help her improve her income and help her family."
Seemed like a perfect fit :)
The payment has been made...
It is only a few less balls of yarn for me to order..
What a wonderful feeling it is to help someone else get a start in their craft business.
